In
the garden everything starts with the health of the soil. We begin
our planning with a soil test to determine what types of soil
conditions we are working with. With native soils we often suggest
incorporating vegetation that has evolved to do well in just such
a soil to reduce watering and maintenance requirements. If this
is not an option amendments are added to correct for any deficiencies
in the soil and to ensure availability of nutrients to the plants.
Nature,
via our local nurseries, provides us with a vast array of both
native and exotic plants, trees and shrubs to choose from. Many
qualifications must be met when selecting plant material. The
plant variety must fit the palette aesthetically and also meet
size, sun, soil and moisture requirements of the site.
Each
individual annual, perennial, herb, shrub and tree is inspected
and hand-picked for health and vigor. The trees are chosen for
their branch structure, character, and the integrity of their
root systems. Tree trunks must be unmarked and foliage must be
healthy. We never buy our plant material sight unseen.
Plants
are carefully transported to the site and installed in the appropriate
soils according to proper horticultural procedures. Watering requirements
are made clear to every client after projects are complete. These
requirements can be met with the installation and use of automatic
drip irrigation systems or hand watering. Mulching helps the gardens
retain moisture and slow down any potential weed growth. We utilize
the best mulches available and apply them properly.
Planting
this way creates beautiful, sustainable landscapes that will function
well over time and place minimal demands on the maintenance budget.
Potential problems can be eliminated with proper planning and
installation. Problem free gardens are beautiful gardens!
